There are two lenses I tend to use more than any others. My Canon 24-70 2.8L and my Canon 70-200 2.8L IS. They are pretty much on each camera body most of the time at weddings. Since I often shoot with two cameras, I can get most of the shots I am looking for by just switching from one camera to the other without swapping lenses. Having the range from 24 to 200mm covered on the full frame Canon 5Dmk2 is really a useful.
It’s not a light lens, but it is sharp, focuses really fast and it gives really nice bokeh. Sure it is not as good as the 50 1.2 or the 135 f2 for this, but for it’s zoom range and it’s versatility it is great. I like using it for group portraits, dancing at weddings, and basic details. I try and switch to a true macro for details, if I have time, but as any wedding photographer knows, you don’t always have time. I find I will arrive at a venue, shoot the tables and stuff with my 24-70 and get good results right away. If I have time I can break out the 16-35 and the 100mm macro etc, but I can get by very often with run and gun shooting and just this lens for most details.
The zoom range is really practical on full frame cameras for most daily use and when I go on family trips this is the lens that stays on my camera in the bag.
I have put a few of my favorite pictures I have taken with my 24-70 2.8L below.
